Key Skaters

W Jake Guentzel (PIT)Pens Re-Sign Jake Guentzel to a Five-Year, $30 Million Contract Extension

  • Guentzel is 15th in the league in shots per 60 at 5v5. On top of that, the winger has a 1.08 expected goals per 60 rate (9th), averages 12.42 scoring chances per 60 (6th), and 5.25 high-danger scoring chances per 60 (15th) at 5v5. Columbus, who’s coming in playing their second game in as many nights has been poor on defense allowing 3.61 goals per game (29th). With goals in three straight games (one was an empty-netter) Guentzel comes in hot in a great matchup.

W Vladimir Tarasenko (STL)

  • The Seattle Kraken has had a rocky first season as an NHL franchise with an 11-23-4 record with 3.61 goals allowed per game (tied for 29th). Tarasenko has points in seven straight games with six goals over that span. The sharpshooting winger is eighth in the league in scoring chances per 60 at 5v5 (11.78) and these are high-quality chances generating a 1.01 expected goals for rate per 60 at 5v5 (15th).

C Mathew Barzal (NYI)

  • Not only is Barzal a great play he’s a tremendous value in a great matchup. The Coyotes continue to be one of the worst defensive teams and one of the most penalized clubs in the league. Barzal and all of the Islanders have been underwhelming this season as the young center has 23 points in 29 games. Arizona has won two straight games despite being 10-24-4 on the season and allowing 33.9 shots on goal per game. The Isles have been hot winning seven of their last 10 games overall and in two of their last three games have recorded four goals.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust, Kris Letang

  • I touched briefly on Columbus’ poor defense as they’ve allowed the most goals per 60 at 5v5 which matches up with the highest expected goals against rate per 60 at 5v5. Crosby, Guentzel, and Rust skate together on the top even-strength line and top power-play unit. Letang joins them on the top power-play unit and has 11 points with the man-advantage this season.

New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal, Zach Parise, Anders Lee, Noah Dobson

The Islanders’ top line of Barzal, Parise, and Lee comes in as one of the better value-line on the slate. Barzal and Lee find themselves on the top power-play line with defenseman Noah Dobson joining them. I mentioned above how poor Arizona’s defense is, specifically their special teams, and I expect the Islanders to have their chances.
