The Slapshot – Mon, March 15th

What you need to know

Blues vs Kings PPD tonight due to weather.

The NHL model has been a new project this year and thus the ratings system is something I’ve been tweaking over time.  I adjusted it this morning to reduce the inflation that was there for skaters and for the most part it’s just reducing everyone’s rating score across the board.  So if you see some lower looking ratings (ideally, 100 is peak) then do not panic compared to previous days.

STACKS

Vancouver

— JT Miller, Brock Boesser, Quinn Hughes

Hockey is a sport that often comes down to playing the “what should happen” vs “what will happen” game, and with the case of the Ottawa Senators, the “what should happen” is just happening over and over and over again.  They’re on a back to back from last night while the Canucks are not and even though it’s in Ottawa, I would trust Vancouver to hit the “what should happen” column tonight.

NY Rangers

— Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Adam Fox

Both the Rangers and Flyers have kind of woken up offensively and I would expect this to be a contested back and forth 4-3 type game.

Other spots to look at

  • Washington 2nd line — top line will be popular, but Kuzy/Vrana wins the money tonight
  • Edmonton / Calgary game — Should be a good volume in this one, so you want skater exposure or goalies

POSITIONAL TARGETS

CENTERS

  1. JT Miller / Bo Horvat … Senators cannot defend centers and these two get all the run for the Canucks
  2. Mika Zibanejad
  3. Sean Couturier
  4. Evgeny Kuznetsov … His goal comes tonight.  Multi point game incoming…

WINGS

  1. Brock Boesser
  2. Jakub Vrana … Vrana at #2?  Yes, he is a lock tonight for me.  The Sabres cannot stop LW and while the focus might be on Ovechkin, we get 4+ SOG per game from Vrana for almost $3k less while also getting PP2 time.  His correlation with Kuzy tonight is the best value on the slate and I expect both of them to score.
  3. Leon Draisaitl … Right now he is the boom or bust play and McDavid is the steady-eddy play.  There’s plenty of other good spots tonight so I don’t think we need EDM as a stack but one offs here are never bad.
  4. Tanner Pearson – I went w/ VAN2 as my main stack for the Canucks, but going 5 Canucks isnt terrible tonight.
  5. Chris Kreider / Artemi Panarin – Wish Bread man was with Zibanejad, so keep an eye on their lines tonight in that regard.
  6. Taylor Hall … Has been good vs WSH and without Wilson they’ve been a little less strong against wingers

DEFENSE

  1. John Carlson
  2. Quinn Hughes
  3. Adam Boqvist
  4. Adam Fox
  5. Thomas Chabot

TOP VALUE

Good value on D tonight with so many games

  1. Evgeny Kuznetsov
  2. Justin Schultz
  3. Nate Schmidt
  4. Nick Suzuki

  1. Connor Helleybuck (Winnipeg)
  2. Ilya Samsonov (Washington)
  3. Jacob Markstrom (Calgary)
  4. Thatcher Demko (Vancouver)
